The LIFE medCLIFFS Consensus List
The LIFE medCLIFFS Consensus List is made up of a total of 94 species of invasive non-native plants, whether or not they are listed in current European and/or Spanish legislation. It has been created and agreed by a Working Group constituted by fifteen external experts, as well as the LIFE medCLIFFS technical staff.
In order to prevent their expansion towards the coastal habitats of the Costa Brava and Cap de Creus, it is essential NOT TO MARKET OR PLANT ANY OF THESE SPECIES.
Among the species already catalogued as invasive in current legislation (and therefore prohibited), the following species are particularly problematic in the area of the project:
Cenchrus setaceus (sin. Pennisetum setaceum)
Opuntia ficus-indica (sin. O. maxima)
Among the species not yet listed in current legislation, the following species are particularly problematic within the scope of LIFE medCLIFFS:
Cenchrus longisetus (sin. Pennisetum villosum)
Kalanchoe tubiflora (sin. K. delagoensis)
Opuntia lindheimeri (var. “linguiformis”)
In order to know and evaluate the state of invasion of these species on the Costa Brava and Cap de Creus areas, biological and ecological data are collected through the LIFE medCLIFFS Observers and Volunteering Networks (action C2).
All these data are used to model the risk of invasion of each species, in order to improve their future management (action C1).
In addition, for the most problematic species in the Cap de Creus area (i.e. Carpobrotus spp., Opuntia spp. and Gazania rigens), several control methods will be implemented through action C3 to improve eradication efficiency.
