Through actions A3 and C3, LIFE medCLIFFS is carrying out several demonstrative actions to improve the eradication protocols currently available for those invasive alien plant species with greatest impact in Cap de Creus, in particular:
- Low-dose chemical control of Gazania rigens has been tested in areas with endemic flora.
- The carmine mealybug (Dactylopius opuntiae), naturally present in the Cap de Creus area, has been used to inoculate individuals of prickly pear cactus (Opuntia ficus-indica) in cliff areas protected from the natural dispersal of this insect. The aim is to evaluate the effectiveness of using the insect as a method of biological control of prickly pear cactus, one of the most abundant invasive plants in Cap de Creus.
- Development of a methodology for the extraction of Carpobrotus in the vertical conditions of the coastal cliffs, which require access with ropes and high technology.
- During 2024, the mechanical and manual removal of Gazania rigens and Carpobrotus will start in flat areas as well as the chemical control with end
otherapy of Opuntia ficus-indica. Together with the above actions, the aim is to develop the most efficient methods for the control of these invasive flora species in the area.
- A door-to-door information campaign has been carried out among more than 160 private properties with gardens located on the seafront so that they collaborate with the project and eliminate, by themselves or through the project, the invasive flora species growing in their gardens. During 2024, invasive flora removal works will begin in some sixty collaborating gardens.

- Control of Carpobrotus spp. in the Natural Park of Cap de Creus (vertical and horizontal)
- Dispersion of carmine mealybug (Dactylopius opuntiae) for the biological control of prickly pear cactus (Opuntia ficus-indica) on the coast of Cap de Creus Natural Park.
- Chemical control of Opuntia ficus-indica in the Natural Park of Cap de Creus
- Control of Gazania rigens in the Natural Park of Cap de Creus (chemical, mechanical and manual)
- Strategy for the control of invasive flora in private coastal gardens in the area of influence of the Cap de Creus Natural Park.
These protocols will be published as they become available.
